Vaginoplasty guide

What is vaginoplasty?

In aesthetic and gynaecological practice, vaginoplasty is an operation that narrows the vaginal canal by tightening its muscle and connective tissue and removing excess lining. It is usually done for a feeling of looseness after childbirth or with age. It is often combined with perineoplasty, which repairs and strengthens the area between the vaginal opening and the anus.

The term vaginoplasty is also used for reconstructive and gender-affirming surgery, which are different operations. For the wider group of genital procedures, including labiaplasty, see the genital aesthetics page.

How is vaginoplasty done?

Vaginoplasty usually takes about 90 minutes and is done under general or spinal anaesthesia, or sometimes local anaesthetic with sedation.

  1. Examination: The gynaecologist checks the vaginal walls, pelvic floor strength and any prolapse.
  2. Marking: The amount of lining to remove is marked on the back wall of the vagina.
  3. Tissue removal: A strip of excess lining is removed.
  4. Muscle repair: The underlying muscles are brought together with stitches to narrow the canal.
  5. Perineal repair: If needed, the perineum is rebuilt and scar tissue from childbirth is corrected.
  6. Closure: The wound is closed with dissolvable stitches.

Who is vaginoplasty suitable for?

Vaginoplasty may suit women who have finished having children and who have a clear feeling of vaginal laxity confirmed on examination. Some also have perineal damage from childbirth.

It may not be suitable, or other treatment comes first, when:

  • You plan further vaginal births
  • There is pelvic organ prolapse or urinary leakage that needs gynaecological treatment
  • There is an active infection or unexplained bleeding
  • The concern is mainly about appearance of the outer area, where labiaplasty may be relevant
  • Pelvic floor exercises or physiotherapy have not been tried

What is recovery like after vaginoplasty?

Most women return to desk work within about one to two weeks, but full healing usually takes several weeks. The main recovery period is usually around three weeks.

  • First week: Swelling, discomfort and light discharge are normal. Sitting may be uncomfortable.
  • Weeks 2 to 3: Pain settles and normal walking and light activity resume.
  • Weeks 6 to 8: Sex, tampons, swimming and heavy exercise are usually allowed again after a check-up.

Keep the area clean, avoid constipation and follow your doctor's instructions on bathing.

What are the specific risks of vaginoplasty?

The specific risks of vaginoplasty relate to narrowing the canal and healing of the perineum.

  • Pain during sex: Over-tightening or scar tissue can cause dyspareunia.
  • Wound breakdown: Stitches can open, especially with infection or strain.
  • Bleeding or haematoma: Usually in the first days.
  • Injury to nearby organs: Rarely, the rectum or bladder can be affected.
  • Return of laxity: Later childbirth or ageing can reduce the effect.

How does vaginoplasty compare with labiaplasty and non-surgical options?

Vaginoplasty tightens the vaginal canal, labiaplasty reduces the inner lips, and non-surgical options aim to strengthen or stimulate tissue without surgery.

What affects the cost of vaginoplasty?

The cost of vaginoplasty depends on the extent of surgery and whether it is combined with other procedures. Factors include:

  • Vaginoplasty alone or with perineoplasty
  • Combination with labiaplasty or prolapse repair
  • Type of anaesthesia and hospital stay
  • Pre-operative tests and follow-up visits
  • The doctor's experience and the city

The exact fee is given after examination. Choose a gynaecologist or plastic surgeon who regularly performs this operation and discusses non-surgical options with you. You can compare doctors who perform genital surgery by city in the doctor listings.

Vaginoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a vaginal birth after vaginoplasty?
A vaginal birth after vaginoplasty is possible but may undo part of the result. Many doctors advise waiting until you have finished having children. Discuss your plans before surgery.
Is vaginoplasty painful?
Discomfort and soreness are common in the first week. Pain is usually managed with prescribed medication. Sitting may feel uncomfortable for a while.
Does vaginoplasty improve sexual satisfaction?
Some women report a change, but results vary and evidence is limited. Over-tightening can cause pain during sex. Discuss realistic expectations with your doctor.
Is vaginoplasty the same as labiaplasty?
No, vaginoplasty tightens the vaginal canal while labiaplasty reduces the inner lips. They are sometimes done together. Each has its own recovery and risks.
Can pelvic floor exercises replace vaginoplasty?
Pelvic floor exercises can improve muscle tone and are often recommended first. They do not remove excess tissue or repair perineal damage. A doctor can assess which approach suits you.
