Leg Aesthetics guide

What is leg aesthetic surgery?

Leg aesthetic surgery changes the shape of the thighs, knees or calves. It is part of body contouring, where the general principles of surgical body shaping are explained. The methods used on the legs are liposuction to remove fat, a thigh lift to remove loose skin, and calf implants or fat transfer to add volume to thin calves.

Which method suits you depends on whether the main issue is fat, loose skin or lack of volume, and many people need a combination.

How is leg surgery performed?

For fat on the inner or outer thighs and around the knees, liposuction removes fat through small incisions. A thigh lift removes a strip of loose skin and fat, most often from the inner thigh. Calf implants are soft silicone implants placed through an incision behind the knee.

  1. Examination: Skin elasticity, fat distribution and leg shape are assessed, and vein problems are checked.
  2. Marking: Areas to treat and incision lines are drawn while you stand.
  3. Anaesthesia: General anaesthesia is common; small liposuction areas may be done with local anaesthesia.
  4. Procedure: Fat is removed, skin is tightened or implants are placed as planned.
  5. Dressing: Incisions are closed and compression garments or bandages are applied.

Thigh liposuction usually takes one to two hours. A thigh lift or combined procedures take longer.

Who is a good candidate for leg surgery, and who is not?

Leg surgery suits adults with a stable weight, good general health and a specific concern in the legs. Liposuction needs reasonable skin elasticity, because it does not tighten loose skin. A thigh lift is mainly for people with loose skin after major weight loss.

  • A history of blood clots or varicose vein problems
  • Smoking
  • Planned large weight changes
  • Swelling of the legs from heart, kidney or lymphatic conditions
  • Expectations of treating cellulite, which surgery does not change much

These situations need extra assessment, and the surgeon decides on suitability after an examination.

What is recovery like after leg surgery?

Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks after leg surgery. Legs tend to stay swollen longer than other areas because fluid collects in them when standing. Compression garments are usually worn for several weeks. Walking early is encouraged to reduce the risk of blood clots. After a thigh lift, wide leg movements and sitting with pressure on the incision may be limited for a while. After calf implants, walking may feel stiff for the first weeks.

Removed fat cells do not return, and a thigh lift result is long lasting, but weight changes and ageing can still affect the shape.

What are the risks of leg surgery?

Leg procedures share the general risks of surgery, with some specific to the legs:

  • Blood clots in the leg veins, which can travel to the lungs
  • Long-lasting swelling
  • Uneven contour or dents after liposuction
  • Wound separation, widened or visible scars after a thigh lift
  • Scar migration downward on the inner thigh
  • Implant displacement, visible edges or nerve irritation after calf implants
  • Numbness

Swelling and pain in one calf, shortness of breath or chest pain needs emergency care.

How does leg surgery compare with other body contouring?

Leg surgery uses the same core techniques as other body contouring, but the scars and swelling behave differently on the legs. A tummy tuck is often combined with a thigh lift after major weight loss.

Thigh liftLoose skin on the inner thighLong scar in the groin or along the inner thighScar length and slow wound healing
Calf implantThin calvesShort scar behind the kneeImplant problems may need surgery

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a surgeon?

The cost depends on the method, the number of areas, implant type, operating time, hospital stay, compression garments and the city. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and ask where the scars will be, how blood clots will be prevented, how long garments are needed and how follow-up will be handled.

Leg Aesthetics Frequently Asked Questions

Can liposuction remove cellulite on the legs?
No, liposuction removes fat beneath the skin but does not reliably improve cellulite. In some cases it can make the skin surface look more uneven. Discuss realistic expectations with your surgeon.
Where is the scar after a thigh lift?
The scar is usually in the groin crease, and in larger lifts it runs along the inner thigh. Its length depends on how much skin is removed. Scars fade over time but remain visible.
How long do legs stay swollen after liposuction?
Swelling in the legs often lasts longer than in other areas. Most of it settles within a few months. Compression garments and walking help reduce it.
Are calf implants permanent?
Calf implants are designed to stay in place long term. They may need removal or replacement if they move or cause problems. Regular check-ups help spot issues early.
Can thigh and knee liposuction be done in one session?
Yes, thighs and knees are often treated together. The total amount of fat removed in one session is limited for safety. Your surgeon plans the areas based on your health and goals.
