Tummy Tuck guide

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, medically called abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal wall. In most cases the surgeon also stitches together abdominal muscles that have separated, a condition called diastasis recti, which is common after pregnancy. It is not a weight loss method.

A tummy tuck is one of the main procedures in body contouring, where surgical body shaping is explained in general terms. It is the main option when the problem is loose skin rather than fat alone.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

A tummy tuck is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes about two to four hours.

  1. Marking: The incision line is drawn low on the abdomen so it can be hidden by underwear.
  2. Incision: A horizontal incision is made between the hip bones, and often a second incision around the navel.
  3. Muscle repair: Separated abdominal muscles are stitched together.
  4. Skin removal: The skin is pulled down, the excess is removed and the navel is brought out in its new position.
  5. Closure: The incisions are closed in layers, drains may be placed and a compression garment is fitted.

What types of tummy tuck are there?

A full tummy tuck treats the whole abdomen and repositions the navel. A mini tummy tuck treats only loose skin below the navel, with a shorter scar and no navel incision. An extended tummy tuck continues the incision towards the flanks for people with skin excess on the sides, often after major weight loss. Your surgeon chooses the type based on the amount and location of loose skin.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck, and who is not?

A tummy tuck suits adults with loose abdominal skin or separated muscles after pregnancy or weight loss, whose weight is stable and who are in good general health.

  • Plans for future pregnancy
  • Weight still changing, or planned further weight loss
  • Smoking, which raises the risk of wound healing problems
  • A history of blood clots
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, heart or lung disease
  • Previous abdominal scars that may affect blood supply

These situations need extra assessment, and the surgeon decides on suitability after an examination.

What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?

Most people return to desk work after about two to four weeks. In the first days you may walk slightly bent at the waist to protect the incision. Drains, if used, are usually removed within the first week or two. The compression garment is worn for several weeks. Lifting and strenuous exercise are usually restricted for about six weeks. Walking early is encouraged to reduce the risk of blood clots.

The result is long lasting, but pregnancy or significant weight gain can stretch the skin and separate the muscles again. The scar is red at first and fades over many months.

What are the risks of a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a larger operation than liposuction and carries more risk. The main risks are:

  • Blood clots in the leg veins and pulmonary embolism
  • Fluid collection under the skin (seroma)
  • Wound separation or delayed healing, especially in smokers
  • Poor blood supply to the skin or navel
  • A wide, raised or uneven scar
  • Numbness of the lower abdominal skin
  • Bleeding and infection

Shortness of breath, chest pain or swelling in one leg after surgery needs emergency care.

What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

A tummy tuck removes loose skin and repairs muscles, while liposuction removes only fat. The two are often combined to refine the flanks during a tummy tuck.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a surgeon?

The cost depends on the type of tummy tuck, whether liposuction is added, operating time, hospital stay, garments and the city. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and ask which type is planned and why, where the scar will sit, how blood clots will be prevented and how follow-up visits are arranged. You can compare doctors who perform tummy tucks by city in the doctor listings.

Tummy Tuck Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the scar after a tummy tuck?
In a full tummy tuck the scar usually runs between the hip bones, low enough to be hidden by underwear. A mini tummy tuck leaves a shorter scar. Scars fade over many months but remain visible.
Can a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?
Stretch marks on the skin that is removed, usually below the navel, are taken away. Stretch marks higher up may move lower but remain. A tummy tuck does not change the quality of the remaining skin.
When can I stand up straight after a tummy tuck?
Many people walk slightly bent for the first days to ease tension on the incision. Most can stand straight within one to two weeks. Your surgeon will guide you as you heal.
Is a mini tummy tuck enough for me?
A mini tummy tuck suits people with loose skin only below the navel and little muscle separation. If loose skin extends above the navel, a full tummy tuck is usually needed. The surgeon decides after an examination.
Do I need drains after a tummy tuck?
Many surgeons use drains for a short time to remove fluid. Some use techniques that avoid drains. Drains are usually removed within the first week or two.
