Liposuction guide

What is liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat from under the skin through small incisions using thin tubes called cannulas and suction. It reshapes specific areas, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back or under the chin, where fat remains despite diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss method and does not tighten loose skin.

Liposuction is the most common procedure within body contouring, where surgical body shaping is explained in general terms. It is also a building block of other operations, such as fat transfer and many combined plans.

How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction usually takes one to three hours, depending on the number of areas.

  1. Marking: The areas to treat are marked while you stand.
  2. Anaesthesia: General anaesthesia is common; small areas may be treated with local anaesthesia and sedation.
  3. Tumescent fluid: A fluid containing a local anaesthetic and a medicine that narrows blood vessels is injected to reduce bleeding and pain.
  4. Fat removal: The cannula is moved through the fat layer through incisions a few millimetres long, and fat is suctioned out.
  5. Closure: Incisions are closed or left to drain, and a compression garment is fitted.

Which liposuction techniques are there?

Besides standard suction, power-assisted (vibrating cannula), ultrasound-assisted and laser-assisted techniques are used. They can make fat removal easier in dense or fibrous areas. No technique has been shown to be clearly superior in every case; the surgeon's skill and planning matter more than the device. VASER is a common brand name for ultrasound-assisted liposuction.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction, and who is not?

Liposuction suits adults close to their ideal weight, with stable weight, good skin elasticity and fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

  • Significant excess weight, where weight loss is advised first
  • Loose skin, which may need skin removal instead
  • A history of blood clots or a clotting disorder
  • Heart or lung disease, or uncontrolled diabetes
  • Smoking

These situations need extra assessment, and the surgeon decides on suitability after an examination.

What is recovery like, and are the results permanent?

Most people return to desk work within a few days to a week after limited liposuction, and within about two weeks after larger treatments. Swelling, bruising and soreness are common, and fluid may leak from the incisions for the first day or two. The compression garment is worn for several weeks. Walking is encouraged from the first day. Strenuous exercise is usually resumed after a few weeks, and the final contour appears over a few months.

Removed fat cells do not grow back. If you gain weight, the remaining fat cells can enlarge, often in untreated areas.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Risks increase with the amount of fat removed and the number of areas treated. The main risks are:

  • Uneven contour, dents or rippling
  • Fluid collection (seroma) and infection
  • Long-lasting numbness or skin colour change
  • Blood clots in the leg veins and pulmonary embolism
  • Fluid and electrolyte imbalance in large-volume liposuction
  • Rare but serious problems such as fat embolism or injury to internal organs from the cannula

For safety, the amount of fat removed in one session is limited. Shortness of breath, chest pain or swelling in one leg after surgery needs emergency care.

What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

Liposuction removes fat, while a tummy tuck removes loose skin and repairs separated abdominal muscles. When the abdomen has both excess fat and loose skin, the two are often combined.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a surgeon?

The cost depends on the number and size of areas, the technique or device used, anaesthesia, hospital stay, compression garments and the city. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and ask how much fat will be removed, which technique will be used and why, how blood clots will be prevented and what happens if the contour is uneven. You can compare doctors who perform liposuction by city in the doctor listings.

The information on this page is for general information only and is not medical advice. The suitable method for you can only be determined by a physician examination.

Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?
The amount removed in one session is limited for safety and depends on your health and weight. Large volumes increase the risk of fluid imbalance and other complications. Your surgeon sets the limit after an examination.
Will fat come back after liposuction?
Removed fat cells do not return. If you gain weight, the remaining fat cells can grow, often in other areas. Keeping a stable weight helps preserve the result.
Is VASER better than traditional liposuction?
VASER is a brand of ultrasound-assisted liposuction that can help in dense or fibrous fat. No technique is clearly better in every case. The surgeon's experience and planning matter more than the device.
Does liposuction leave scars?
Incisions are only a few millimetres long and are placed in hidden areas when possible. They usually fade to small marks over time. People prone to thick scars should mention this to the surgeon.
Can liposuction be done under local anaesthesia?
Small areas, such as under the chin, can often be treated under local anaesthesia with sedation. Larger or multiple areas usually need general anaesthesia. Your surgeon will choose based on the plan.
