Russian Lip Filler guide

What is Russian lip filler?

Russian lip filler is not a separate product but a technique in which hyaluronic acid is placed in the lip in vertical lines. In the classic technique, filler is placed horizontally inside the lip, which makes the lip fuller and pushes it forward. In the Russian technique, filler is placed with small vertical injections from the base of the lip towards its border.

The aim is to lift the lip upwards without making it project. The result usually aims for a more defined centre, a lip that tapers towards the corners and a flatter profile from the side. The properties of fillers and their general risks are covered on our lip filler page.

How is Russian lip filler done?

Russian lip filler is done with many small vertical injections along the lip using a fine needle and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, slightly longer than classic filler.

  1. Analysis: The doctor assesses lip height, width, the balance between the upper and lower lip and how defined the border is.
  2. Marking: Injection points may be drawn on the lip.
  3. Numbing: A numbing cream is applied, and products containing lidocaine reduce sensation during the treatment.
  4. Vertical injections: Very small amounts of filler are placed from the base towards the border, working from the centre outwards.
  5. Review: Symmetry is checked. The result is reviewed again after two weeks, once swelling has settled.

The technique is usually done with a needle. Because the injections are concentrated near the lip border, the doctor needs a detailed knowledge of lip anatomy.

Who is Russian lip filler suitable for, and who is it not?

Russian lip filler suits people with limited lip height who do not want their lips to stick out and who have enough tissue volume. The doctor decides on suitability after an examination.

The technique may not suit you, or may give limited results, in these situations:

  • Very thin lips with little tissue
  • Lips already overfilled or distorted by previous filler
  • An old filler that is permanent or of unknown content
  • Full lips where you want to keep the natural curve
  • Expectations of a shape that does not suit your face

If old filler is present, the doctor may suggest dissolving it first and letting the lips rest.

How long does Russian lip filler last, and what is recovery like?

The effect usually lasts 6 to 12 months, because the material is the same hyaluronic acid used in classic filler. The duration depends on the product, the amount and the person.

Because there are many injection points, small bruises and swelling can appear in the first days. Swelling usually eases noticeably within two to three days, and the result is assessed after about two weeks. A small touch-up may be done at this visit if needed.

On the first day, avoid pressing on the lips, hot drinks and intense exercise. Some doctors also advise against drinking through a straw or pursing the lips in the first hours. Wait for your doctor's advice before using lipstick or make-up.

What are the risks of Russian lip filler?

The risks come from the same source as classic filler, but some need extra attention with this technique:

  • Filler spreading beyond the lip border, creating a raised look above the upper lip
  • Bruising from the many injection points
  • Irregularities or small lumps along the border
  • Asymmetry
  • Blockage of a blood vessel and resulting tissue damage

Sudden severe pain, whitening or a dusky colour in the lip are emergency signs, and you should contact a doctor at once. Migration or irregularities can be corrected with hyaluronidase.

How does Russian lip filler differ from classic lip filler?

Russian lip filler differs from classic filler in the direction and depth at which the same material is placed.

What affects the cost of Russian lip filler, and how do you choose a doctor?

The cost depends on the product, the amount and the length of the treatment. The main factors are:

  • Brand and density of the hyaluronic acid product
  • Number of syringes used
  • Whether a touch-up visit is included
  • The doctor's experience and the clinic's city

The final fee is set after a consultation. In Turkey, the technique is performed by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and doctors trained in medical aesthetics. Ask about the doctor's experience with the Russian technique, whether it suits your lip shape and whether hyaluronidase is kept in the clinic. You can compare doctors who perform the Russian technique by city in the doctor listings.

Russian Lip Filler Frequently Asked Questions

How many syringes does Russian lip filler need?
The amount depends on your starting lip volume and the shape you want. Many doctors start with a small amount and add more at a second visit if needed. The exact amount is set at the consultation.
Can Russian lip filler be done on thin lips?
With very thin lips, it can be hard to gain enough height with the vertical technique. The doctor may first add a little volume and let the tissue stretch. Sometimes the classic technique is a better fit.
Can Russian lip filler cause a filler moustache?
If filler spreads beyond the lip border, a raised look can form above the upper lip. Because the vertical technique places filler close to the border, this risk needs care. Migration can be corrected with hyaluronidase.
When can I kiss after Russian lip filler?
Avoid pressure on the lips for the first day or two. Normal contact is fine once swelling and tenderness ease. Your doctor will give you the exact timing.
Is Russian lip filler the same as a heart-shaped lip?
Heart-shaped lips describe the look the Russian technique often aims for. The goal is to lift the centre of the lip and taper it towards the corners. Not every lip shape suits this look.
