Breast Aesthetics guide

What is breast aesthetic surgery?

Breast aesthetic surgery covers operations that change the volume, shape or position of the breast on the chest wall. In women, the most common procedures are breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift. In men, surgery is also used to treat gynecomastia, an enlargement of the breast gland. Procedures that reshape the nipple or the darker area around it (the areola) belong to this group as well.

Breast surgery is not always only about appearance. Very large breasts can cause neck, back and shoulder pain, and reduction then also aims to relieve symptoms. Pregnancy and weight changes affect breast shape, so timing matters.

How is breast aesthetic surgery performed?

Breast surgery is performed by placing an implant, removing tissue or repositioning tissue, depending on the change you want. In breast augmentation, implants filled with silicone gel or saline are used. The implant is placed through an incision in the fold under the breast, at the edge of the areola or in the armpit. It can sit in front of or behind the chest muscle. Fat transfer, where your own fat is injected, is another option, but the increase in volume it gives is more limited.

  1. The examination assesses breast tissue, skin quality and chest measurements.
  2. Depending on age and risk, a breast ultrasound or mammogram may be requested.
  3. Implant size, incision site and implant position are agreed together.
  4. The operation is usually done under general anaesthesia.
  5. A supportive bra is worn afterwards, and drains may be placed.

Breast augmentation usually takes one to two hours. Reduction and lift operations may take longer.

How are breast reduction and breast lift done?

In both procedures the nipple is moved higher and excess skin is removed. In breast reduction, part of the breast tissue is also removed. Incisions usually run around the areola and down the breast, with a horizontal cut in the fold if needed. A lift can be combined with an implant when volume has also been lost.

Who is a good candidate for breast surgery, and who is not?

Breast surgery is considered for people whose breast development is complete, who are in good general health and whose weight is stable. The surgeon decides on suitability after an examination. These situations need extra assessment or postponement:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Plans for pregnancy in the near future, especially before a lift or reduction
  • A breast lump or suspicious finding that has not been investigated
  • A family history of breast cancer
  • Smoking
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or a bleeding disorder
  • Active infection

In gynecomastia, the cause should be investigated first. Hormonal disorders, some medicines and liver disease can lead to breast enlargement in men. Gynecomastia during puberty often goes away on its own, so doctors usually wait before recommending surgery.

How long does recovery take after breast surgery?

Most people return to desk work within about a week to ten days after breast surgery. Tightness, swelling and pain in the chest are common in the first days, and pain is usually controlled with medication. A supportive bra is worn day and night for several weeks. Heavy lifting, arm-intensive exercise and running are usually postponed for a few weeks.

It can take a few months for an implant to settle and for swelling to go down fully. Scars fade over time.

Do breast implants last a lifetime?

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. They may need to be replaced in the future because of rupture, hardening or a change in shape. Silicone implant rupture may cause no symptoms, so imaging at the intervals your surgeon recommends is advised.

What are the risks of breast aesthetic surgery?

The risks depend on the procedure. Alongside general surgical risks, there are risks specific to implants or tissue removal.

  • Bleeding, blood collection (haematoma) and infection
  • Hardening around the implant (capsular contracture)
  • Implant rupture or displacement
  • Changes in nipple and breast skin sensation
  • Asymmetry and visible scars
  • Reduced ability to breastfeed after reduction
  • Reduced blood supply to the nipple
  • A rare type of lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), linked mainly to textured implants
  • Systemic symptoms such as fatigue and joint pain reported by some people

The link between these systemic symptoms and implants is still being studied. If you notice swelling, a lump or a change in shape years after surgery, see your doctor.

How do the types of breast surgery differ?

Types of breast surgery differ according to whether they aim to increase volume, reduce it or lift the breast. Augmentation adds volume. Reduction removes excess tissue and skin. A breast lift raises a sagging breast. Gynecomastia surgery removes enlarged gland and fat tissue in men.

ProcedureAimCommon techniquePoint to keep in mind
Breast augmentationIncrease volumeSilicone or saline implant, fat transferImplants may need replacing later
Breast reductionReduce volume, relieve symptomsRemoval of tissue and skin, nipple moved higherBreastfeeding may be affected
Breast liftCorrect saggingSkin removal, reshaping, implant if neededPregnancy can change the result
Nipple surgeryCorrect inverted or large nipplesNipple or areola reduction, inversion correctionMilk ducts may be affected
Gynecomastia surgeryTreat breast enlargement in menLiposuction, gland removalThe cause must be investigated first

What affects the cost of breast aesthetic surgery?

The cost depends on the type of procedure and whether an implant is needed. Price ranges are shown in a separate section of this page. The main factors are:

  • The type of procedure and whether several procedures are combined
  • The brand, type and surface of the implant
  • Operating time and the anaesthesia team
  • Length of hospital stay
  • Imaging before surgery, and the bra and follow-up visits after it
  • The city where the facility is located

The exact fee is set after an examination and a written treatment plan.

How do you choose a surgeon for breast surgery?

Look for a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, the specialty that performs breast aesthetic operations in Turkey. You can use these questions as a checklist at the consultation:

  • What is the surgeon's specialty certification and breast surgery experience?
  • What brand and surface type of implant is proposed, and what documents come with it?
  • Will you receive an implant card with the serial details?
  • Where will the incision be, and will the implant go in front of or behind the muscle?
  • What are the possible effects on breastfeeding and breast cancer screening?
  • What happens if an implant needs to be replaced in the future?
  • Which licensed healthcare facility will the operation take place in?

You can compare surgeons who perform breast surgery on DoktorNo by city.

Breast Aesthetics Frequently Asked Questions

Can you breastfeed after breast surgery?
Many people can breastfeed after augmentation, although incision site and implant position can affect it. After reduction or nipple surgery, the ability to breastfeed may be reduced. If you plan to breastfeed in the future, mention this at the consultation.
How often do breast implants need to be replaced?
There is no fixed replacement interval that applies to everyone. Replacement is considered when a problem such as rupture, hardening or a change in shape appears. Your surgeon will explain the schedule for check-ups and imaging.
Do breast implants affect mammograms?
Implants can hide part of the breast tissue on a mammogram. Radiology teams use extra imaging views in this case. Always tell them you have implants before the scan.
When is gynecomastia surgery done?
Before gynecomastia surgery, the cause of the breast enlargement is investigated. Gynecomastia in puberty often regresses on its own, so doctors usually wait. Surgery is planned when the condition is thought to be permanent.
When can I exercise after breast surgery?
Light activity such as walking is usually allowed from the first days. Exercise that strains the arm and chest muscles is generally postponed for a few weeks. Your surgeon will confirm when you can return to sport at your check-ups.
