Breast Lift guide

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, medically called mastopexy, raises breasts that have sagged and moves the nipple and areola to a higher position. It is part of breast aesthetics, where the general principles of breast surgery are explained. Sagging, called ptosis, is common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss and with age, as the skin and supporting tissue stretch.

A lift reshapes the breast but does not add much volume. If you also want more fullness, especially in the upper part of the breast, a lift can be combined with an implant.

How is a breast lift performed?

A breast lift is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes about two to three hours.

  1. Assessment: The degree of sagging, skin quality and nipple position are assessed.
  2. Marking: The new nipple position and incision lines are drawn while you stand.
  3. Incision: The pattern is chosen according to how much skin must be removed.
  4. Reshaping: Breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, excess skin is removed and the nipple is moved higher. The areola can be made smaller at the same time.
  5. Closure: Incisions are closed and a supportive bra is fitted.

For mild sagging, an incision around the areola may be enough. Moderate sagging often needs an incision around the areola and down the breast (lollipop). Marked sagging may need an extra incision in the breast fold (anchor).

Who is a breast lift suitable for, and who is it not?

A breast lift suits adults with sagging breasts or nipples that point downwards, whose weight is stable and who are in good health.

  • Plans for future pregnancy, which can stretch the breasts again
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Weight still changing
  • Smoking, which raises the risk of wound and nipple healing problems
  • An uninvestigated breast lump
  • Wanting a lift without accepting visible scars

These situations need assessment first. The surgeon decides on suitability after an examination.

What is recovery like, and how long does a breast lift last?

Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks, and recovery usually takes around three weeks. Soreness and swelling are common at first. A supportive bra is worn day and night for several weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are usually postponed for about four to six weeks. The breast shape settles over a few months, and scars fade over many months but remain visible.

A lift does not stop ageing. Gravity, weight changes and pregnancy can cause some sagging again over the years.

What are the risks of a breast lift?

The specific risks include:

  • Visible or widened scars
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Asymmetry in shape or nipple position
  • Poor blood supply to the nipple, rarely leading to tissue loss
  • Wound separation, especially in smokers
  • Some sagging returning over time
  • Possible effects on breastfeeding
  • Added implant risks when combined with augmentation

How does a breast lift differ from other breast surgery?

A lift raises the breast, breast augmentation adds volume and breast reduction removes volume. In men, a different problem, enlarged breast tissue, is treated with gynecomastia surgery.

ProcedureLifts the breastChanges volumeScars
Breast liftYesLittle or noneAround the areola, often down the breast
Lift with implantYesAdds volumeSame as lift
Augmentation aloneOnly for very mild saggingAdds volumeShort scar
Breast reductionYesReduces volumeSimilar to lift, often longer

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a surgeon?

The cost depends on the degree of sagging, the incision pattern, whether an implant is added, operating time, hospital stay, bras and the city. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and ask which incision pattern is planned and why, whether a one-stage or two-stage plan is safer if an implant is added, and how scars will be managed.

Breast Lift Frequently Asked Questions

Will a breast lift make my breasts bigger?
A breast lift reshapes and raises the breast but does not add much volume. The breasts may even look slightly smaller because skin is removed. If you want more fullness, an implant can be added.
Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?
Many people can breastfeed after a lift because the nipple usually stays attached to the underlying tissue. The ability may still be reduced in some cases. Discuss future plans with your surgeon.
How long does a breast lift last?
The result is long lasting, but ageing, gravity and weight changes continue to affect the breasts. Some sagging may return over the years. A stable weight helps preserve the result.
Can a breast lift be done without scars?
No, a breast lift always leaves scars because skin must be removed. The length depends on the degree of sagging. Scars usually fade over many months.
Should I have a lift and implant together or separately?
Many people have both in one operation. In some cases, such as marked sagging, a surgeon may suggest doing them in two stages for safety. Your surgeon will explain which option suits you.
