Nipple Aesthetics guide

What is nipple aesthetic surgery?

Nipple aesthetic surgery changes the nipple or the darker skin around it, the areola. The main procedures are inverted nipple correction, nipple reduction and areola reduction. They can be done on their own or as part of wider breast aesthetics, which covers the general principles of breast surgery.

An inverted nipple points inwards instead of outwards. It can be present from birth or develop later. A nipple that turns inwards for the first time in adulthood, especially on one side, should be checked by a doctor before any cosmetic treatment, because it can rarely be a sign of an underlying breast problem.

How is nipple surgery performed?

Nipple surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia and takes about an hour.

  1. Examination: The nipple, areola and breast are examined, and imaging may be requested if there is a new change.
  2. Planning: The goal is agreed, and the effect on milk ducts and breastfeeding is discussed.
  3. Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is injected.
  4. Procedure: For inverted nipples, tight bands under the nipple are released and the nipple is supported with stitches. For nipple reduction, a wedge of tissue is removed. For areola reduction, a ring of pigmented skin is removed around its edge.
  5. Dressing: A protective dressing is applied, sometimes with a shield over the nipple.

Who is nipple surgery suitable for, and who is it not?

Nipple surgery suits adults whose breast development is complete and who are bothered by the shape or size of their nipples or areolas. Men can also have areola or nipple reduction, often alongside gynecomastia treatment.

  • A new or one-sided inverted nipple that has not been investigated
  • Nipple discharge or a breast lump
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Plans to breastfeed soon, if ducts may be cut
  • Smoking
  • Active infection

These situations need assessment first. The surgeon decides on suitability after an examination.

What is recovery like after nipple surgery?

Most people return to desk work within a day or two, and the area usually heals within about a week. Mild pain, swelling and some crusting are common. A soft bra or dressing protects the area, and the surgeon will advise when you can shower normally. Exercise that causes friction is usually postponed for a few weeks. Scars around the areola edge tend to blend with the colour change but can sometimes widen.

After inverted nipple correction, the nipple can sometimes turn inwards again, and a repeat procedure may be needed.

What are the risks of nipple surgery?

The main risks are:

  • Reduced ability to breastfeed if milk ducts are divided
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • The inverted nipple returning
  • Asymmetry between the two sides
  • Widened scars or loss of pigment at the scar
  • Infection or delayed healing
  • Rarely, poor blood supply to the nipple

How does nipple surgery differ from other breast procedures?

Nipple surgery changes only the nipple and areola, while other breast procedures change the whole breast. Areola reduction is often included in breast reduction and lift surgery, and the nipple position may change after breast augmentation. In men, areola changes are often treated together with gynecomastia surgery.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a surgeon?

The cost depends on the procedure, whether one or both sides are treated, whether it is combined with other breast surgery, anaesthesia and the city. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and ask whether the technique preserves milk ducts, what happens if an inverted nipple returns and how scars will be managed.

Nipple Aesthetics Frequently Asked Questions

Can I breastfeed after inverted nipple surgery?
It depends on the technique. Some methods preserve the milk ducts, while others divide them and can affect breastfeeding. Tell your surgeon if you plan to breastfeed so the technique can be chosen accordingly.
Is an inverted nipple a health problem?
An inverted nipple present since puberty is usually harmless. A nipple that turns inwards for the first time in adulthood should be checked by a doctor. Imaging may be needed to rule out an underlying cause.
Can men have nipple reduction?
Yes, men can have nipple or areola reduction. It is often done together with gynecomastia surgery. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia.
Will the scar be visible after areola reduction?
The scar sits at the edge of the areola, where the colour change helps hide it. In some people the scar can widen or lose pigment. Scars usually fade over several months.
Is nipple surgery done under general anaesthesia?
Most nipple procedures are done under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is used when they are combined with larger breast surgery. Your surgeon will decide based on the plan.
