Zirconium Crowns guide

What is a zirconium crown?

A zirconium crown is a crown or bridge made from zirconium dioxide (zirconia) ceramic. Dental zirconia is stabilised with additives such as yttrium to make it stronger. It is one of several options for crowning a tooth, alongside porcelain fused to metal and glass ceramics.

The main features of zirconia are:

  • It contains no metal, so no dark metal line appears at the gum edge.
  • It is highly resistant to fracture and can be used on back teeth and in bridges.
  • It is considered biocompatible, meaning it is well tolerated by body tissues.
  • It is designed digitally and milled from solid blocks.

How are zirconium crowns made and fitted?

Zirconium crowns are made from a digital or conventional impression using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The process usually follows these steps:

  1. An examination and X-rays confirm whether the tooth is suitable for a crown.
  2. The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia to make room for the crown.
  3. A digital scan or a conventional impression is taken.
  4. The crown is designed on a computer and milled from a zirconia block.
  5. The crown is sintered in a furnace, where it hardens and reaches its final size.
  6. It is coloured, and in layered types porcelain is added on top.
  7. The crown is tried in, and its fit and bite are checked.
  8. It is fixed to the tooth with a suitable cement.

The process is usually completed in one to two weeks over several visits. Clinics with in-house milling may finish sooner.

Who are zirconium crowns suitable for, and who are they not?

Zirconium crowns suit people who need a crown and prefer a strong, metal-free material. The dentist decides on suitability after an examination. Zirconia is often chosen for:

  • Back teeth that take heavy chewing forces
  • Bridges to replace missing teeth
  • People sensitive to metal alloys
  • People who do not want a metal line at the gum edge
  • Crowns placed on dental implants

In some cases zirconia is not the first choice. For healthy front teeth that are only discoloured or misshapen, options needing less reduction, such as veneers, are considered first. Very thin veneers are usually made from glass ceramics. Heavy teeth grinding raises the risk of porcelain chipping on layered zirconia. Gum disease or decay is treated first.

Is a zirconia crown on an implant the same as a zirconia implant?

No, these are different things. A zirconia crown on an implant is the tooth fitted on top of an implant placed in the jawbone, usually connected through an abutment made of titanium, zirconia or both. A zirconia implant means the screw placed in the bone is itself made of zirconia. These are a newer option than titanium implants, and their range of use and long-term data are not as broad. The dentist chooses the implant material based on bone structure and the case.

How long do zirconium crowns take, and how long do they last?

Treatment is usually completed in one to two weeks. It takes longer if root canal or gum treatment is needed first.

Sensitivity to hot and cold may last a few days after the tooth is shaped. Most people get used to the new crowns within a few days. If the bite feels high, the dentist should adjust it.

Zirconia is durable, but it should not be expected to last a lifetime without problems. Its lifespan depends on oral hygiene, grinding habits and regular check-ups. The natural tooth underneath can still decay and the gum can recede, and in these cases the crown may need replacing.

Caring for zirconium crowns is no different from caring for natural teeth. Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth. Clean under bridges with special floss or interdental brushes. If you grind your teeth, your dentist may suggest a night guard.

What are the risks and drawbacks of zirconium crowns?

Like other crowns, zirconium crowns require the tooth to be shaped and carry some risks. Possible problems include:

  • Sensitivity or nerve damage after tooth reduction
  • Chipping or flaking of porcelain on layered zirconia
  • Wear on the opposing tooth if the zirconia surface is not well polished
  • A more opaque look than a natural tooth in some types
  • Decay or gum inflammation at the crown edge
  • The crown coming loose

Zirconia is very hard, so it is difficult to adjust in the mouth or remove when needed. Removal often means cutting the crown off. Tooth structure that has been removed does not grow back.

How do the types of zirconia differ?

Types of zirconia differ in the balance between strength and translucency. In general, as translucency increases, strength decreases somewhat.

TypeStructureStrengthLimitation
Monolithic zirconiaA single piece of zirconiaHigh strength, no porcelain to chipCan look more opaque in some types
Layered zirconiaZirconia core with porcelain on topNatural colour transitionsThe porcelain layer can chip
High-translucency zirconiaSingle-piece zirconia that lets more light throughMore natural look on front teethLower strength than classic types
Multilayer zirconiaColour and translucency graded within the blockShade transition similar to natural teethStrength varies by product

The type is chosen by weighing the position of the tooth, the bite and cosmetic expectations together.

What determines the cost of zirconium crowns?

The cost depends on the number of teeth crowned and the type of zirconia used. The price range on this page gives only a general idea. The main factors are:

  • Number of crowns or bridge units
  • Choice of monolithic, layered or high-translucency zirconia
  • The manufacturer of the zirconia blocks
  • Laboratory work and digital design
  • Fillings, root canal or gum treatment needed beforehand
  • The clinic's city and the dentist's experience

What should you look for when choosing a dentist for zirconium crowns?

Experience in prosthetic treatment and digital production matters. Zirconium crowns are fitted by dentists, and prosthodontists handle complex cases. When choosing, you can check:

  • Was the type of zirconia explained?
  • Were you told the manufacturer and documentation of the material?
  • Was the laboratory or system that makes the crown named?
  • Is a try-in stage planned?
  • Were options needing less tooth reduction discussed?

You can compare dentists by city in the doctor listings on this page.

The information on this page is for general information only and is not medical advice. The suitable method for you can only be determined by a physician examination.

Zirconium Crowns Frequently Asked Questions

How many years do zirconium crowns last?
Zirconia is a durable material, but its lifespan varies from person to person. Oral hygiene, teeth grinding and regular check-ups make the difference. If the tooth underneath decays or the gum recedes, the crown may need replacing.
Do zirconium crowns look natural?
The look depends on the type of zirconia. High-translucency and multi-shade types can give a more natural appearance on front teeth. Classic high-strength types may look more opaque.
Are teeth filed down for zirconium crowns?
Yes, some tooth structure is removed from every surface to make room for the crown. This is done under local anaesthesia and cannot be reversed. How much is removed depends on the zirconia type and the condition of the tooth.
Can zirconium crowns break?
Zirconia resists fracture well but is not unbreakable. In layered types, the porcelain on top can chip. Biting hard objects and grinding increase this risk.
Is zirconia or porcelain better?
The answer depends on the position of the tooth and your needs. Zirconia is metal-free and very strong, while porcelain fused to metal has been used for a long time. Your dentist will advise after an examination.
