Dental Veneers guide

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain or composite, bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change how it looks. A restoration that covers the whole visible tooth is called a crown. Both are made in a dental laboratory or with digital systems, and the word veneer is sometimes used loosely for crowns as well.

Veneers are mainly cosmetic. Crowns both protect and reshape a tooth. Teeth with very large fillings, fractures or root canal treatment are often strengthened with a crown. A crown supported by neighbouring teeth to fill a gap is called a bridge, and teeth fitted on dental implants are also a type of crown.

To choose the right option, the dentist looks at how much healthy tooth structure remains.

How are veneers and crowns fitted?

Veneers and crowns are usually fitted over two or more visits. The process usually follows these steps:

  1. The tooth is examined and X-rays are taken to check the root and surrounding tissues.
  2. Any decay is removed, and fillings or root canal treatment are done first if needed.
  3. Local anaesthesia is given, and the tooth is shaped so the restoration can sit on it.
  4. An impression or a digital scan is taken.
  5. The shade is chosen.
  6. A temporary restoration protects the tooth while the final one is made.
  7. The final restoration is tried in, and fit, colour and bite are checked.
  8. It is fixed to the tooth with a special dental cement.

If you are considering whitening, it should be done before veneers or crowns. The colour of the restoration material does not change with later whitening.

Who are veneers suitable for, and who are they not?

Veneers and crowns suit people with tooth damage too large for a filling, or with a clear cosmetic concern. The dentist decides on suitability after an examination.

They are often recommended for:

  • Teeth with large fillings or fractures
  • Teeth weakened after root canal treatment
  • Dark teeth that do not lighten with whitening
  • Misshapen or worn teeth
  • Missing teeth that can be replaced with a bridge

A full crown is usually not the first option for healthy teeth that only have a colour problem. Whitening, bonding or veneers that need less reduction are considered first. Untreated gum disease is treated before any restoration. In people who grind their teeth heavily, material choice and a night guard are planned separately.

How long does treatment take, and how long do veneers last?

Treatment is usually completed over a few visits within 1 to 2 weeks. With digital scanning and in-clinic milling, some restorations can be made faster. If root canal or gum treatment is needed first, the process takes longer.

Teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold for a few days after shaping. Getting used to a new restoration usually takes a few days. If the bite feels high, the dentist should adjust it.

Restorations should not be expected to last a lifetime. With good care they usually last about 5 to 15 years, sometimes longer. Lifespan depends on oral hygiene, material, teeth grinding and regular check-ups. Decay can still develop at the edge of a restored tooth.

How should you care for veneers?

Care for veneers and crowns is no different from care for natural teeth. The tooth beneath and the gum around it are living tissue, and their health determines how long the restoration lasts.

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean the margins with floss or interdental brushes.
  • Clean under bridges with special floss.
  • Do not bite hard objects such as ice, nut shells or pens.
  • Wear the night guard your dentist recommends if you grind your teeth.
  • Keep up with dental check-ups.

If a restoration feels loose, chips or darkens at the edge, see your dentist without waiting.

What are the risks and side effects of veneers?

Veneers and crowns are irreversible treatments and carry some risks. Possible problems include:

  • Sensitivity after tooth reduction
  • Nerve damage and the need for root canal treatment during or after reduction
  • Decay at the edge of the restoration
  • Gum inflammation or recession at the margin
  • Chipping or fracture of porcelain
  • The restoration coming off
  • Pain or wear on opposing teeth from an uneven bite

Removed tooth structure does not grow back, and a reduced tooth will need a restoration for life. This is why the amount of reduction on healthy teeth is planned carefully.

How do the types of veneers and crowns differ?

The types differ in material and in how much of the tooth they cover.

TypeStructureCommon usePoint to consider
Porcelain fused to metalPorcelain over a metal frameworkBack teeth and bridgesA dark line may show at the margin if the gum recedes
ZirconiaZirconia framework or solid zirconiaFront and back teeth, bridgesTranslucency varies by type
All-ceramic (such as lithium disilicate)Metal-free glass ceramicFront teeth, single crownsLimited use in long bridges
Porcelain veneerThin ceramic bonded to the front surfaceColour and shape changes on front teethNeeds a healthy enamel surface
Composite veneerTooth-coloured resinSmall shape correctionsCan stain over time

A full crown requires reduction on every side of the tooth, while a veneer needs more limited reduction on the front surface only.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a dentist?

The cost depends on the material and the number of teeth. Other factors include laboratory work and digital design, any fillings, root canal or gum treatment needed first, temporary restorations and trial stages, the city and the dentist's experience. The price range on this page gives only a general idea; the exact fee comes from the treatment plan.

Veneers and crowns are made by dentists, and prosthodontists take part in complex cases. When choosing, you can check:

  • Was an option needing less reduction discussed?
  • Were you told about the material and its brand?
  • Was the laboratory or system used named?
  • Is a trial fitting planned?
  • Were check-ups and the steps to take if problems arise explained?

You can compare dentists listed on DoktorNo by city.

Dental Veneers Frequently Asked Questions

Do they shave your teeth for veneers?
Yes, some enamel is usually removed so the veneer sits flush, though less than for a crown. This is done under local anaesthesia and cannot be reversed. The amount depends on the material and the tooth.
Can teeth under veneers decay?
The veneer material itself does not decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can. Decay usually starts at the edge near the gum. Regular brushing and cleaning between teeth reduce this risk.
Do veneers hurt?
Tooth shaping is done under local anaesthesia. Teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold for a few days afterwards. If pain lasts or gets worse, see your dentist.
Can veneers be whitened?
No, porcelain and composite veneers do not change colour with whitening. This is why whitening, if wanted, is done before the shade is chosen. A stained composite veneer may need polishing or replacement.
How many veneers do I need?
The number depends on how many teeth show when you smile and what needs changing. Some people need one or two, others a full set of front teeth. Your dentist plans this after examining your smile.
