Dental Aesthetics guide

What is dental aesthetics?

Dental aesthetics is the shared name for dental treatments that aim to improve how the teeth look. It is not a single procedure. Different problems, such as colour, shape, size, alignment and gum level, are treated with different methods.

Cosmetic treatment cannot be separated from oral health. Decay, gum disease or bite problems are dealt with first. Cosmetic work done without a healthy base may not last.

The main treatments in dental aesthetics are:

  • Teeth whitening to lighten the colour of natural teeth
  • Crowns and veneers that cover the front surface or the whole tooth
  • Zirconia crowns, a metal-free crown option
  • Gum aesthetics to adjust the level and look of the gums
  • Dental implants that replace the root of a missing tooth
  • Composite bonding, orthodontic treatment and edge reshaping

When several treatments are combined in one plan, this is called smile design.

How is a dental aesthetics treatment planned?

Treatment starts with an examination and is planned step by step according to your oral health. The plan usually follows this order:

  1. The mouth is examined and your expectations are discussed.
  2. X-rays or a CT scan are taken if needed.
  3. Decay, gum disease and any need for root canal treatment are identified.
  4. Proportions of the face, lips and teeth are assessed. Photos or a digital scan may be taken.
  5. Suitable options are explained, with the pros, cons and risks of each.
  6. Health problems are treated first, then cosmetic treatment begins.
  7. A schedule for check-ups and maintenance is agreed.

Some treatments are finished in one visit. Others take weeks or months.

Who is dental aesthetics suitable for, and who is it not?

Dental aesthetics is for people who are unhappy with how their teeth look and whose oral health allows treatment. The dentist decides which treatment fits after an examination.

Common reasons people seek treatment include:

  • Discolouration or stains
  • Chipped, worn or short teeth
  • Gaps between teeth (diastema)
  • Mild crowding or protruding front teeth
  • A gummy smile
  • Missing teeth

In some cases treatment is postponed or a different method is chosen. Untreated gum disease, widespread decay and uncontrolled teeth grinding are the main examples. Some treatments wait until jaw growth is complete in young people. Non-essential cosmetic work is usually postponed during pregnancy.

What does a natural-looking result depend on?

A natural result depends on how well the teeth fit the face, lips and gums. White or straight teeth alone do not always look natural.

The dentist weighs several measures together. One is the ratio between the length and width of the front teeth. Another is whether the edges of the upper teeth follow the curve of the lower lip. Even gum levels on the right and left also matter.

Shade choice needs restraint. Very light shades can look artificial on some faces, so colour is chosen with skin tone and the whites of the eyes in mind. When crowns sit next to natural teeth, colour matching matters even more. Some clinics offer a temporary trial, called a mock-up, that lets you see the planned shape in your mouth before treatment.

How long does treatment take, and how long do results last?

Time and longevity vary widely between treatments. Whitening can be done in one visit, but the effect fades over time. Crowns and veneers usually need a few visits. Implant treatment can take months because the bone needs to heal.

No cosmetic dental treatment should be expected to last a lifetime without problems. Crowns may need replacing, gums can recede and colour can change. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, regular check-ups, smoking and teeth grinding.

What are the risks and side effects?

The risks depend on the method used. Common possible problems are:

  • Temporary tooth sensitivity after whitening
  • Sensitivity or nerve damage in teeth reduced for crowns
  • Chipping or debonding of crowns and veneers
  • Gum inflammation or recession at crown margins
  • Infection, bleeding and swelling after surgical procedures
  • Colour or shape that does not meet expectations

Treatments that remove tooth structure cannot be reversed. For this reason, less invasive options are considered first when they are suitable.

How do the dental aesthetics options differ?

The options differ in the problem they solve and how much they change the tooth. The table gives a general comparison.

TreatmentMain useEffect on tooth structure
Teeth whiteningLightening natural teethNo reduction
Composite bondingSmall chips, gaps and shape changesNone or very little
VeneersColour and shape changes on front teethLimited reduction of the front surface
CrownBadly damaged or root-treated teethReduction on all sides
Gum aestheticsGum level and appearanceGum tissue, sometimes bone
ImplantReplacing a missing toothSurgical placement in the jawbone
OrthodonticsCrowding and bite problemsNo reduction needed

Protruding or prominent front teeth, often called bunny teeth, are treated with one or more of these options.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a dentist?

The cost depends on the treatment chosen, the number of teeth and the materials. Other factors include laboratory work, any fillings, root canal or gum treatment needed first, extra steps such as CT scans, digital scans and trials, the city and the dentist's experience. The price range on this page gives only a general idea; the exact fee comes from the treatment plan made after an examination.

Most cosmetic work is done by general dentists. In complex cases, specialists in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, periodontology, orthodontics or oral and maxillofacial surgery take part. When choosing, you can check:

  • Is a detailed examination done before treatment?
  • Are different options explained with their pros and cons?
  • Are you told about the materials and the laboratory?
  • Is a trial or mock-up offered when needed?
  • Is there a follow-up schedule after treatment?

You can compare dentists listed on DoktorNo by city.

The information on this page is for general information only and is not medical advice. The suitable method for you can only be determined by a physician examination.

Dental Aesthetics Frequently Asked Questions

Does dental aesthetics damage the teeth?
Some treatments do not touch the tooth at all, while others require removing tooth structure. Removed structure does not grow back. This is why the dentist considers less invasive options first.
How many visits does dental aesthetics take?
The number of visits depends on the treatment. Whitening can be done in one visit, while crowns and veneers usually need a few. Implant treatment can take months because of bone healing.
Is there an age limit for cosmetic dental treatment?
There is no single age limit; suitability depends on the treatment. Some treatments, such as implants, wait until jaw growth is complete. The dentist assesses age and dental development together.
How should I care for my teeth after cosmetic treatment?
Brushing twice a day and cleaning between the teeth are the basics. Regular dental check-ups help catch crown and gum problems early. If you grind your teeth, the dentist may recommend a night guard.
What is a smile makeover?
A smile makeover, also called smile design, combines several treatments in one plan. It can include whitening, veneers, gum shaping or orthodontics. The plan is built around your face, lips and oral health.
